I’m going to talk about morality in Games, but first I’m going to talk about morality in real life, and given I’m form the west, I’m going to mostly use western culture’s morality which comes mostly from Christianity (Or at least that’s where I believe it comes from). Now aside from the religious sins such as not bowing to idols etc. most of the other sins come from infringing on other peoples rights, obviously not slaves given they where viewed as property at the time and not as people until they were freed, I won’t be counting slaves in this, because it’s not relevant to the topic. Now you may be wondering about things like lust, fornication and adultery.
Lust is a rather difficult case and it’s both pretty situational and subjective, but I will try to narrow it down, if one is married and agrees to only have eyes for their spouse, then you would infringe on an contract agreed by both parties and thus infringing on the rights of the other spouse. But if one is not married, but lust after another that could be consider a sin due to coveting the others image, but this sin could easy be dismissed if one doesn’t believe that one owns one’s own image, which is debatable, and I won’t cover that. Now fornication is consider a sin, because one would be infringing on the rights of the potential child, if the child is born to two parents that don’t care for each other it would be bad for the child, and it would seem unethical to do that to the child and given effective birth control is relatively recent, I won’t count that either and even if I did a potential child is pretty rare, but still possible depending on the birth control. Adultery is consider a sin for the same reason lust and fornication can, breaking a contract and infringing on the rights of the potential child and spouse. (I will note a sin and a crime can over lap, but should not be considered the same thing.)
Now that out of the way, you could sum up most physical sins to “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” so what does all this have to do with morality in games, well if you are thinking morality should be added to a game (Then don’t add it to the Game like Shadow the Hedgehog did, just kidding, but seriously don’t) you should do it keeping in mind that, the NPCs should have “rights” in the game and to add a bit of spice, you could even give the player rights, Like if a guard catches an NPC attacking the player, you could have the guard arrest them. (And try not to do a Fable where killing you wife is better, then divorcing her Lol) What do you think about morality in games, do you think I have a point or did I miss calculate?
